Quartets

The Jamestown Harmony Express has always promoted the basic Barbershop Unit.   The BARBERSHOP QUARTET!

Through the years the chapter has been privileged to help create and support a number of quartets and this page will, when completed, help you discover all those foursomes who were proud to belong and contribute to the success of the Jamestown NY Chapter, SPEBSQSA Inc.

Here are some active and some retired quartets formed from members of the Jamestown Harmony Express Chorus.

For more information, send us a message at info@HarmonyExpress.com.

3rd Generation (Quartet is Retired)

         Hugh                   Hans                     Harry                   Norm

These guys were brought together in the chapter singing Valentine songs around the county.  They are "3rd Generation" because they are all grandfathers, and they have billfold pictures to prove it!  Although these guys are retired from 3rd Generation, they remained active in the chapter during the summer months as long as possible.

  • Tenor - Hugh Oglevee, retired railroad man, loves this hobby. His smile and enthusiasm fills up a room.  He and wife Joyce lived in Salamanca, NY.  Joyce is now deceased and Hugh is in a retirement home and the only living member of the quartet.
  •
  • Lead - Hans Steen retired from Alcoa and had over 60 years singing barbershop harmony.  If a song fits the barbershop style, Hans probably knew it. Hans lived in the Pt. Chautauqua area and loved sailing and gardening.  In the winter months he and his wife, Donna enjoyed the sun in Florida.  Hans passed in 2020.
  •
  • Bass - Doc, the friendly retired dentist, Harry Glatz, dispenses a resonate, full, deep bass that set a great foundation for our barbershop chords.  He resided with his lovely wife, Dodie, in Jamestown, and both are now deceased.
  •
  • Baritone - Norm Herby, a former Chautauqua County Legislator who was active in insurance, real estate, license plate collecting moved to Minnesota with his wife, Vi.  and both are now deceased.

3rd Generation's favorite saying was "It's GREAT to be a barbershopper and GREAT to be a grandfather."

The JHE was blessed to have this foursome in our chapter!!
